Background
If you are on campus and you tune in to 104.1FM, you will be regaled by the sounds of Chanco Community Radio. This is a radio station that is owned and run by University of Malawi.
The Chanco Community Radio is owned by University of Malawi. It started broadcasting on 6th July, 2013 and was officially opened by the then Minister of Environment and Climate Change Management, Hon. Halima Daudi on 22nd July, 2013.
The ceremony took place at the station premises at Mangansanja, Malemia in Zomba.
Coverage
The radio has a radius of 100 Kms and covers the Lake Chilwa basin and its surrounding areas. The frequency reaches the following districts:

Machinga
Phalombe
Chiradzulu
Mangochi
Mulanje
Balaka
Vision
To be a leading community radio station in development content, training and capacity- building for other community broadcasters
Main Objective: To provide information on Climate change adaptation; natural resource management and other developmental programmes; capacity building for other community radios and training of University of Malawi students and radio listening clubs in broadcasting skills.
Target Information
Chanco Community Radio also provides information on Climate change adaptation; natural resource management and other developmental programmes; capacity building for other community radios and training of University of Malawi students and radio listening clubs in broadcasting skills.
In that regard, the station provides opportunities for students from the Department of Language and Communication Studies (LACS) to train in radio journalism.
