The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the six Departments in the Faculty of Science at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi. The department is geared towards producing geoscientists who can work anywhere in the world.
The department offers courses in Geography encompassing Physical, Human, Economic, Social and Environmental Aspects. This is offered from the first year and is open to Bachelor’s degree programmes in Science, Social Science, Humanities and Education.
Over the years, Geography has remained popular especially among Bachelor of Education students as a teaching subject.
On the other hand, Earth Sciences, with Geology as a major component, is also offered from year one to year four and is mostly open to pure Science (Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education).
A simple study on enrollment trends in the last twenty years show that enrollment into the various years in Earth Sciences has gone down significantly with some years even having gaps despite normal University intake.
Current research in the department involves activities aimed at understanding the geographical and geological processes that act Malawi within the African and global context.
The department also offers a Masters programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in collaboration with Waternet.
