The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) is housed in the Faculty of Humanities at Chancellor College.
The CLS was established in 1996 under instruction from the Malawi government to replace the Chichewa Board whose responsibility was to promote the development of Chichewa, Malawi's national language.
The Centre's main mandate is to promote, through research, the development of all Malawian languages and guide government on language policy matters.
The Centre also recognizes the educational, social, economic and political importance of non-African languages such as English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and others. It therefore, carries out research and consultancy in these languages as well.
The Centre also offers a number of services including: translation of materials from one language to another, interpretation of speeches, editing of materials from various languages, conducting short courses in both Malawian and non-Malawian languages, collaborating with individuals/ organisations in the writing of textbooks and readers in Malawian and non- Malawian languages, and collaborating with foreign research centres.
